Leverhulme Research Fellowship

The Faculty is delighted to announce that Professor Ralph Wedgwood has been awarded a Research Fellowship by the Leverhulme Trust. The award will be held from 1 October 2009 to 30 September 2010. Leverhulme Research Fellowships are prestigious awards made to experienced researchers. The aim of the fellowships is to enable award-holders to complete of a programme of original research. For more details about the awards see the Leverhulme Trust’s website at: http://www.leverhulme.ac.uk/grants_awards/grants/research_fellowships/

The title of Professor Wedgwood’s project is The Requirements of Rationality. The goal of the project is to develop a unified account of rationality -- including a unified account of both rational belief and rational choice -- based on a conception of the nature of reasoning, and of what it means to call a process of reasoning "rational". This project aims to incorporate insights from several different subdisciplines within philosophy -- including epistemology, ethics, and the formal approaches to rational belief and rational choice that make use of the tools of logic and probability theory. The plan is to present this research in the form of a book, to be published by Oxford University Press.
